Youth Reviews: Men win big at home, Olympic too strong for Women

Our Youth sides took to the field once again this weekend with our Men picking up another victory to continue their undefeated season, while our Women fell to a top Sydney Olympic team.

The Men’s League Three team are knocking on the door of the top of the table with another classy performance that saw them win 4-1 over South Coast Flame at home.

Our young Women are still searching for their first win of the season but played their hearts out against one of the heavyweights of the NPL NSW Women’s competition.

Football NSW Reporters Jack George and Nikola Pozder review our matches from the weekend:

Newcastle Jets 4 – 1 South Coast Flame – Football NSW League Three

Newcastle Jets have defeated South Coast Flame to go third on the League Three Men’s table, as they look to utilise their games in hand to propel to the summit over the next few weeks.

South Coast Flame opened the scoring early in the 6th minute, with Fabian Iacovelli chipping the goalkeeper from outside the box.

Newcastle came back into the game in the second half, with Peter Grozos scoring directly off a corner to equalise the scores.

Blake Archbold then got a double as the Jets flew away with the three points, while 15-year-old Janni Rafty got his first goal for the League Three Men’s side.

Newcastle coach Ric Marchioli was pleased with his side’s performance.

“Looking forwards, there are many more levels that these boys can hit,” he said.

“We haven’t begun to scratch the surface of what they’re capable of and we’re getting closer and closer to where we want to get to as a team in terms of style of play and application of that style of play.

“While we do that, it’s important that we’re ruthless like we were in the second half today.”

Newcastle will next face Prospect United, while South Coast Flame will host Fraser Park.

Sydney Olympic 5-0 Newcastle Jets – NPL NSW Women’s

The action kicked off at Belmore Sports Ground on Saturday afternoon as Sydney Olympic dismantled the Emerging Jets 5-0.

It was the second straight high scoring defeat for the Jets, while Olympic are starting to flex their muscles.

It didn’t take long for the home team to assert their dominance and hit the front. Mackenzie Hawkesby opened her account for the season, getting on the end of a Teigan Collister cross and heading the ball into the back of the net.

The Jets improved from their performance from last week and made it difficult for the home team to break them down.

That was all until Claudia Cholakian doubled Olympic’s lead. Picking up the ball after a delightful pass from Hawkesby, curling her effort into the far corner of the goal.

Just after the half hour mark, some exquisite one-touch football by Olympic could not be finished off by Cortnee Vine who lobbed the ball wide of the target.

Suzanna Behn-Smith then made some important saves to keep the Jets in the game, one in particular from Sarah Yatim.

15 minutes into the second half and it was 3-0. Cortnee Vine, who has been Olympic’s best so far this season, opened her account for the campaign after springing the offside trap, rounding the keeper and tapping the ball home.

The pick of the goals came five minutes later through Charlotte McLean in some style. The right back picked the ball up outside of the box and made a perfect connection to give Behn-Smith no chance in the Jets goal.

Olympic substitute Georgia Koutzoumis was fantastic after coming off the bench, setting up Sarah Yatim with a phenomenal pass, only for the later to miss the chance to score.

Yatim, who could have had a few goals, rounded off the scoring in stoppage time from the penalty spot. Koutzoumis again in the thick of it was brought down in the box following some quick feet inside the area, giving the referee no choice but to award the spot kick.

In our lower grades, there were multiple wins and high scoring matches.

In the Girls matches, our 14s and 15s were too strong Olympic and produced solid performances to gain three points, while all our Boys teams scored two goals however only two picked up wins – the 13s and 14s.
