What’s in a day: Angus Thurgate

Newcastle Jets midfielder Angus Thurgate takes us through a normal day in the life of the all-action midfielder.

What do you do before you come into training?

“When I wake up I’m heading downstairs to make myself some oats for breakfast. I’ll make myself a coffee in a keep-cup and usually one for Dane Ingham who I drive to training so I’ll make him one before I pick him up. Sometimes he’ll pick me up and drive me to training.”

What’s your pre-training routine?

“I’ll come in and say hello to everyone, there’s usually a bit of carry-on from a few culprits in the team, Hoffy (Jason Hoffman) is usually playing up and Jordan Elsey will have his music on, then I’m off to the treatment room to get my body ready for training.”

What do you play in the car on the way to Jets training at Maitland?

“I like to mix it up, when we know it’s a big session we like to get ourselves pumped up a bit with a bit of hip-hop, R&B, and sometimes Electronic house.”

What is your favourite drill in training?

“I like the seven vs seven games. Anything that involves a lot of chance creation and scoring I quite enjoy.”

Who catches your eye on the training field?

“There’s a few, I’d have to say Beka Mikeltadze who always catches the eye. Brandon O’Neill has been very clean since he’s come into the club and also Carl Jenkinson who has been putting in some quality balls into the box.”

What’s your favourite post-training meal?

“If it’s a big session some of the lads will go to Mr Schnitzel, we have lunches here after training. Chicken salad and lasagne are usually my go-to.”

Away from the training field, what do you like to do in Newcastle?

“In the summertime, it’s great to go down to the beach for recovery. I like Dickson Park. Last season a lot of us would go out for a hit of golf and there are some great courses around Newcastle and the Hunter Valley.”
