NUMBERS: Stats behind our 2021/22 Season

There were plenty of good times throughout Season 2021/22, but also challenges we struggled to overcome.

Regardless, our season finished on a high thanks to a strong win over Perth in the Australia Cup Play-off to secure our spot in the Round of 32.

Now that our season has finally come to an end, we’ve decided to dive into the stats of the season and take a look at the numbers that matter from the campaign that was.

45

Goals scored

Manager Arthur Papas promised the fans exciting football when he arrived back in July, and that’s exactly what we received.

With a new-look strikeforce up front, the team produced one of the Club’s best ever attacking seasons with an average of 1.7 a game – the second most in Jets history.

This season also saw the emergence of Georgian Gun Beka Mikeltadze who nailed 13 goals, effectively breaking the Club record for most goals in a debut season and becoming jut the fifth player to ever score double digits.

Our side also made sure to put on a performance when playing at home with 29 of our 45 goals coming when playing at McDonald Jones Stadium – the highest total we’ve ever achieved as a Club and also the highest of any team in the league when playing at home this season.

31

Total assists

In addition to our goals scored, there was plenty of team efforts on show throughout the season as we finished second only to Melbourne City for most assists made.

A large chunk of these came from creative midfielder Daniel Penha who finished with 12, and the leader of the competition, but there were numerous players who chipped in as a total of 13 players finished with an assist to their name.

Mikeltadze, Hoffman and Yuel all finished in equal-second with three assists.

127

Substitutions made

Our coaching staff used the whole team a lot this season, finishing with the most substitutions made in the league.

This could be down to the challenging schedule we faced due to COVID breaks, and the sicknesses that carved throughout our squad at various points in the season.

Our substitutes averaged 23 minutes on the pitch when they came off the bench, with a total of 25 used across the 2021/22 campaign.

16

Club debutants

From the 25 Jets players that took to the pitch, 16 of them made their club debuts highlighting just how much change our team encountered from years prior.

12 of those debuts came in the first round, and five were international visa players.

Many of these players will return for Season 2022/23, creating an exciting prospect for what’s to come for this group.

6

Clean sheets

It’s no secret our defence wavered throughout the season, however the Jets were still able to shutout the opposition six times.

This is the most clean sheets we’ve achieved in three seasons, however unfortunately we leaked 43 goals overall – the most since 2016/17.

With that being said, our side did their best to defend all across the pitch as we won back possession in the final third six times a game – the second most in the league. We also made 274 tackles this season, behind leaders Melbourne Victory’s 293.

363

Fouls drawn

Up until the final weekend of the competition, we were the most fouled team as we finished just behind Wellington.

Our attackers continued to trouble defences across the league, with Beka Mikeltadze finishing in second having been fouled 50 times. Penha was close behind, having been fouled 44 times.

Contrastingly though, our side were third in fouls committed over the course of the season, with midfielder Angus Thurgate committing the second-most fouls with 48.
