Match Report: Unlucky loss for the Jets

The Newcastle Jets have been defeated 3-1 in this afternoon’s clash with Western United, with a goal in the third minute to open the scoring for the away side. Beka Mikeltadze got his name on the scoresheet, converting a penalty for his side.

Within the first minute the Jets had a shot on target which nearly opened the scoring for the home side, with the shot from Trent Buhagiar just shy of going in the net.

The visitors then took the lead in the third minute which saw Noah Botic head the ball past Duncan. 

Newcastle went on to dominate in attack with a number of quality chances from Kosta Grozos early on, who was unlucky to hit the net, with Western United’s Jamie Young a forcefield for the Jets attack.

In the 29th minute United doubled their lead with another goal by Noah Botic, who slotted the ball into the goal.

Shortly after, the Jets were awarded a penalty after a hand ball in the box by Jacob Tratt. Beka Mikeltadze went on to convert the penalty by slotting the ball into the bottom left corner. 

Despite Newcastle dominating in attack, the half time score remained at 2-1, with United leading at the interval.

Tensions were high in the second half, with both teams using their attacking chances at both ends of the field.

Newcastle saw a triple substitution in the 60th minute which saw Brandon O’Neill return to the field after being out with an injury.

In the 72nd minute, Western United solidified their win with a goal from Tongo Doumbia to bring the score line to 3-1.

The Jets continued to create chances in the final third, however were unlucky to find a goal. Western United went home with the three points.

Newcastle will travel to New Zealand next week to take on Wellington on Saturday the 4th of March with a 1pm AEST kick off.
