Match Report: Jets suffer unlucky loss against Canberra

The Newcastle Jets were defeated by Canberra United at home with three goals scored in a seven-minute window to give the visitors a 3-0 win. Newcastle had multiple chances in attack but were unlucky to find the back of the net.

The game began with attacking opportunities for both sides who were eager to score early in the match.

The Jets had a fantastic chance to take the lead in the 16th minute, after a one-on-one run for Lauren Allan whose shot was saved by Canberra’s goalkeeper Chloe Lincoln. Ash Brodigan then found the rebound to take a shot that was cleared off the line by Canberra’s Ellie Brush.

Canberra had a few chances of their own in the first half, with Georgina Worth being a forcefield against Canberra’s attack.

The 35th minute saw an impressive goal-bound shot save from Georgina Worth, tipping the ball over the bar stopping Vesna Milivojević from scoring for her side.

Despite the many chances for both sides, the halftime score remained level at 0-0.

The second half began with another cracking save from Worth to deny Vesna Milivojević a goal.

The away side took the lead in the 63rd minute with strike from Laura Hughes, just two minutes later Michelle Heyman doubled their lead after jumping on a loose back pass to find herself one on one with Worth.

A penalty was awarded to Canberra in the 69th minute as Laura Hughes went down in the box, Grace Maher converted the spot kick.

Towards the end of the match the Jets had a handful of goal-scoring chances, with Lara Gooch’s long-range shot tipped over the bar by Lincoln, and another cracking shot from Sophie Stapleford in the 90+5 minute.

The match finished with Canberra taking the three points home with them with a 3-0 over the Jets.

Newcastle have a quick turnaround with their next match midweek against Western United on Wednesday the 8th of February.
