Match Report: Incredible drama as O’Neill rocket secures win

The Newcastle Jets have secured the three points and keep their chances of A-League finals alive after a late Brandon O’Neill strike secured a 2-1 win over Macarthur FC.

The Jets started the match brightly, dominating possession, creating chances as Reno Piscopo fired a shot just wide of Kurto’s post in the 15th minute.

The chances continued to come as Jenkinson and Ingham were unlucky to find the back of the net with headed chances in the 19th minute.

Both sides continued to trade blows as the first half finished level 0-0.

The Jets started the second half strongly and were awarded a free-kick on the edge of the box. Beka Mikeltadze fired his shot which was palmed away for a corner by Bulls goalkeeper Filip Kurto.

The Jets injected Jaushua Sotirio into the match and the winger almost made an instant impact. Angus Thurgate linked up well with Brandon O’Neill who found Sotirio only for the winger’s shot to sail over the crossbar.

The Jets broke the deadlock in the 79th minute when Jaushua Sotirio’s inswinging corner was met by co-captain Matthew Jurman to find the back of the net and make it 1-0.

The Jets continued to look for a second but as the game opened up, Macarthur found an equaliser in the 92nd minute which looked to have broken the Jets spirit through Bachuna Arabuli’s header.

The Jets didn’t let their heads drop and co-captain Brandon O’Neill riffled in a shot past a helpless Kurto to send the Newcastle crowd into raptures.

The Jets now face the Central Coast Mariners next Saturday afternoon at McDonald Jones Stadium with kick-off at 5.30 pm.
