Ahead of the first A-League Women’s F3 Derby since the return of the Central Coast Mariners into the competition, both the Mariners and Newcastle Jets have agreed to create a new trophy to symbolize the rivalry.
A piece of guard rail from the M1 motorway, formerly known as the F3, has been used to create this unique A-League Women’s trophy.
Famously called the F3 Derby due to it being the original name of the motorway that joins Newcastle to the Central Coast, the rivalry has become one of the most recognised and famous in the A-League.
With the Central Coast Mariners now returning to the Liberty A-League Women’s competition, the time is perfect to create a trophy specifically for the A-League Women’s F3 Derby.
There is currently no holder of the A-League Women’s F3 Derby Trophy, with the winner of this season’s best of two series to become the inaugural holder.
For this season only, if both team’s win one match, it will then be awarded to the team with the best goal difference. If both teams have scored an equal number of goals, it will go to an away goals rule.
In the rare scenario that there is an equal aggregate of away goals and results at the end of the first two games the clubs will hold a penalty shootout that does not affect the A-League ladder.

Central Coast Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp is excited and pleased to be able to present an F3 Derby trophy specifically for the A-League Women’s competition.
“There is no doubt that the F3 Derby holds a special place in A-League folklore and now we get to bring that passion around the rivalry to life in the Women’s game. To symbolise the A-League Women’s F3 Derby with such a unique trophy where the two teams will literally be playing for an old guard rail from the freeway just adds to the story of one of the most captivating Derby’s in Australian sport,” Mielekamp said.
“I’ll be honest, we were torn as to what the A-League Women’s F3 derby should look like and I want to thank Shane Mattiske and his team at the Jets for once again being passionate about working together to create something that overtime, will be very special for everyone at both clubs to compete for and celebrate.
Newcastle Jets Executive Chairman Shane Mattiske said.
“The F3 Debry is one of the greatest rivalries in Australian Sport and we’re looking forward to seeing our Women’s team carry that rivalry back into the Liberty A-League this Saturday.
I know that the whole club is looking forward to bringing the trophy back to Newcastle at the end of this series.”
