ALW Match Report: van Egmond shines in thrilling contest

Despite an inspired performance from Matildas superstar Emily van Egmond, the Newcastle Jets have been defeated by Melbourne City 3-2 in front of 3,207 fans at No.2 Sportsground on Sunday afternoon.

The match started in frantic fashion with Melbourne City taking the lead in the 8th minute after the ball spilled to Daniela Galic on the edge of the box who remained composed to put the visitors in front.

The home sidee responded minutes later when Lara Gooch found space on the left to put in a cross which was missed by City goalkeeper Lysianne Proulx as the bell fell to Emily van Egmond who made no mistake in putting the ball in the back of the net.

Gary van Egmond’s side continued to push on and were rewarded, when after a fantastic save from Jets goalkeeper Izzy Nino, Emily van Egmond put through a brilliantly timed ball for Lara Gooch to run onto and score her first goal in the A-Leagues.

City managed to find an equaliser in the 78th minute when a well placed cross from Galic found Matildas striker Holly McNamara who placed her header past Nino to make it 2-2.

Dario Vidosic’s side were rewarded for their persistence when Emina Ekic played in Holly McNamara in injury time to cooly finish past Nino and hand City a 3-2 win.

Gary van Egmond’s side now face a trip to Canberra next Sunday at McKellar park at 4 pm.
