ALW Match Report: Jets unlucky in Perth defeat

The Newcastle Jets are unlucky to have not come away with a point after going down against Perth Glory 1-0 at HBF Park on Sunday afternoon.

The Jets had the first chance of the match when Mindy Barbieri couldn’t get control of her shot inside the first ten minutes which was steered wide of the goal.

The home side had the next big chance when Jessika Cowart’s shot was blocked at the last second by Jets defender Natasha Prior in the 22nd minute.

Perth had a lapse in concentration when in the 32 minute a pass back was pounced upon by Melina Ayres who couldn’t guide her shot on target.

The Jets striker had another chance at the end of the first half when she was found in the box by Emma Dundas. Ayres’ shot blazed over the crossbar as the sides headed into the sheds level at 0-0.

The home side took the lead in the 50th minute when Perth striker Millie Farrow found Susan Phonsongkham inside the box to cooly tuck home her shot.

The Jets almost made it 1-1 in the 59th minute when Claudia Cicco found space on the right to whip in a cross that floated onto the crossbar. Seconds later Rebecca Burrows found space on the edge of the box who had her shot saved by Glory keeper Morgan Aquino.

The Jets tried to break down Perth Glory and young sparks Milan Hammond and Lara Gooch were injected into the game to break down the home side’s defence however they held firm to hold on for a 1-0 win.

Gary van Egmond’s side turn their attention to their first home game of the season when they take on the Western Sydney Wanderers in a doubleheader at McDonald Jones Stadium on November 5.
