ALW Match Report: Jets unlucky in derby defeat

The Newcastle Jets have been defeated 2-0 by rivals the Central Coast Mariners on the Liberty A-League this afternoon.

The home side started the match with a spring in their step as strikers Sarina Bolden and Melina Ayres linked up inside the first minute with the latter firing a shot just wide of the Mariner’s goal.

The Mariners opened the scoring only two minutes later when Rola Badawiya put in a low cross for Wurigumula who fired past Nino to make it 1-0.

The Jets didn’t let the early goal phase them and continued to put heavy pressure on the Mariners backline and Mindy Barbieri came close when her free-kick had to be palmed away for a corner by Mariners goalkeeper Sarah Langman.

Starting up front together for the second time this season, Melina Ayres and Sarina Bolden continued to show signs of their link up play with Ayres firing her first time shot to the left of the Mariners goal.

After a cagey start to the second half the Mariners doubled their lead in the 72nd minute when Paige Hayward beat the Jets offside trap to score past Nino and make it 2-0.

The visitors almost made it 3-0 on the stroke of full-time when Shadeene Evans had her shot hit the crossbar.

The Jets couldn’t find a way back into the match as the Mariners claimed the inaugural F3 Derby Women’s trophy.

Ryan Campbell’s side next find themselves in action when they take on the Wellington Phoenix at Maitland Sportsground on Sunday, 4th February at 5 pm.
