ALW Match report: Jets turn on the style with win over Western United

A brace from Lauren Allan as well as goals from Sarina Bolden and Emily van Egmond have seen the Newcastle Jets win 4-2 over Western United on Sunday afternoon at No.2 Sportsground.

The Jets started the match with a few chances on the counter-attack, most notably when Sophie Hoban found space inside the box in the 18th minute to pull the ball back across goal only for Western United to clear.

Lauren Allan threatened down the left hand side and the winger scored the first goal of the match when she was played in behind by striker Sarina Bolden. Allan showed her pace and composure to score and put the Jets 1-0 ahead.

The Jets almost made it 2-0 when a sharp turn and shot on the edge of the box by livewire midfielder Emma Dundas flashed just wide.

The second half started in frantic fashion when Western United’s star striker Hannah Keane was fouled inside the box by Izzy Nino. Matildas star Chloe Logarzo stepped up to pull a goal back for the visitors.

The Jets hit back in the 62nd minute when a well timed run into the box from Emily van Egmond allowed the Matildas midfielder to place her shot into the bottom left corner and make it 3-1.

United hit back two minutes later when a spectacular shot from outside the box by Sophie Papadopoulos restored hope for the visitors.

The Jets however, continued to push on and were rewarded for their constant attacking threat when Sarina Bolden audaciously lobbed the goalkeeper from outside the box to make it 4-2.

Striker Melina Ayres made her return from injury and was unlucky to not find herself on the scoresheet when she placed the ball into the back of the net only to be ruled offside.

The win sees Gary van Egmond’s side leap into 6th plcae on the ladder.

They now face an away trip to Wellington in New Zealand on Saturday to take on the Phoenix. Kick-off is at 12.45 pm AEDT.
