ALW Match Report: Jets and Canberra share points in thrilling contest

Newcastle and Canberra have played out a thrilling 3-3 draw at No.2 Sportshround on Saturday afternoon.

The Jets opened the scoring in the 15th minute when striker Sarina Bolden struck a sweet first-time volley which gave Canberra no chance of keeping out.

The visitors were not down for long when a ball across goal from striker Michelle Heyman found Nickoletta Flannery at the back post to tap in and make it 1-1 in the 23rd minute.

Canberra struck again when a quick counter attack from Deven Jackson resulted in the midfielder narrowly squeezing her shot past Jets goalkeeper Izzy Nino to make it 2-1 in the 31st minute.

Lauren Allan went close from inside the 18-yard box when her shot scraped past the post in the 45th minute.

The Jets started the second half with strong intent. Substitute Lara Gooch whipped in a brilliant cross for Sarina Bolden to head home, only for the Phillippines international to be flagged offside.

Gooch wasn’t to be denied only moments later when she lashed a stunning strike on the edge of the box to put the Jets level at 2-2 in the 50th minute.

Newcastle continued to fight for the lead and were awarded that when Sarina Bolden showed great hold-up play to slide a ball across goal for striker Mindy Barbieri to tap home from close range and make it 3-2.

The visitors managed to find a late equaliser when in the 85th minute, a stunning long range strike from defender Sarah Clark rescued a point for the side from the Australian Capital Territory.

Gary van Egmond’s side next find themselves in action when they take on Brisbane Roar in Unite Round at Leichhardt Oval on Saturday night.
