ALW Match Report: Jets unlucky in cruel ending

Sydney FC started the match with huge intent, putting the Jets on the back foot inside the first 10 minutes.

Sky Blues midfielder Mackenzie Hawkesby had a huge chance to score after rounding Jets goalkeeper Isobel Nino, only to be denied by a last itch tackle from Libby Copus-Brown.

Hawkesby did find the back of the net two minutes later with a well taken shot however she was flagged for offside.

The Jets took the lead when a quick layoff down the right from Melina Ayres found Lauren Allan who whipped in a beautiful cross for Sarina Bolden to header past Sydney goalkeeper Jada Whyman and make it 1-0 in the 15th minute.

Sydney FC continued to press and look for an equaliser and almost found it on two separate occasions through Cortnee Vine who was denied by the post both times as the Jets held firm to see out the first half.

The home side started the second half exactly how they wanted when Cortnee Vine’s header at the back post was met by 16-year-old midfielder Maddie Caspers to make it 1-1.

Ryan Campbell’s side continued to strive for the lead and Mindy Barbieri almost made it 2-1 when her well taken free-kick struck the crossbar in the 60th minute.

Sarina Bolden continued to work tirelessly up front and her link up with Cassidy Davis almost resulted in the Jets captain finding the back of the net, only for her shot to sail high.

The Jets were dealt a cruel blow in injury time when Zara Kruger was played in behind as her lob shot over Nino found the back of the net to win the match for Sydney FC.

The Jets next find themselves in action next Sunday when they face the Central Coast Mariners at No.2 Sportsground on Sunday the 28th January at 5 pm.
