ALW Match Preview: Newcastle Jets v Western Sydney Wanderers

The Newcastle Jets travel to Wanderers Football Park this weekend to take on the Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday the 28th, kicking off at 3 pm.

The Jets had a bye last week in Round 11, allowing time to prepare for this weekend’s clash with the break allowing crucial players to regain their fitness.

In Round 10, Newcastle went down 5-1 to Canberra, which saw Tara Andrews score a late goal for her side off a set piece delivery from Cass Davis.

The Wanderers’ most recent match was against Melbourne City where they lost 1-0. They are currently positioned one place above Newcastle on eight points, with the Jets on seven.

With only two wins so far for Newcastle, Ash Wilson’s side will be looking to replicate their previous win against the Wanderers, which saw Sarah Griffith score a hat-trick in her second game for the Jets.

The previous meeting between the two sides saw Newcastle win 4-2 in a thrilling match in Tamworth in Round 2, with goals from Sarah Griffith and Tara Andrews. In their six previous meetings, the Jets have won two, lost two, and drawn two.

Both Sarah Griffith and Murphy Agnew made their return in the game against Canberra, both coming on in the second half. The duo created multiple attacking opportunities for their side and will be looking to do the same on Saturday. Griffith has scored four goals in the seven matches she has played this season.

Both Griffith and Agnew will look to play this weekend, with Tessa Tamplin unavailable due to an injury.

Matilda’s representative Amy Harrison has been crucial in midfield for the Wanderers this season and looks to be a strong competitor against the Jets. She has scored two goals for her side in the 2022/2023 season. Newcastle’s Cannon Clough will be utilising her fast pace to stop the Wanderer’s attack from scoring.

Western Sydney’s Amy Harrison will be one the Jets will have to handle on Saturday.

The Jets have scored a number of goals this season with their tally currently sitting at 15 goals in their nine matches. Ash Wilson’s side have entertained with their attacking play. The Wanderers have scored seven goals in their 10 matches played.

This Saturday’s match will no doubt be a competitive one, with both teams looking to take the crucial three points.

Jets fans can watch the game live via Paramount+ at 3 pm or catch up on the 10Play app.
