ALM Match Report: Stamatelopoulos fires as Jets win against Roar

The visitors had the first genuine chance when Carlos Armiento had his goalbound shot blocked by Dane Ingham in the ninth minute.

The Jets were awarded a penalty in the 22nd minute after a handball in the box.

Brisbane goalkeeper Macklin Freke saved the resulting spot-kick from Newcastle midfielder Reno Piscopo.

The Jets took the lead in the 29th minute when captain Apostolos Stamatelopoulos fired in a header off the back of a Kosta Grozos free-kick to make it 1-0.

The Roar’s night went from bad to worse when captain Jay O’Shea was shown a red card on the stroke of half-time when the midfielder was initially shown a yellow card however VAR intervened and he was shown his marching orders not long after.

The Jets started the second with intent and doubled their lead in the 53rd minute when a ball across goal from Daniel Wilmering found Stamatelopoulos who scored his second of the match.

Rob Stanton’s side had their third goal only minutes later when Stamatelopoulos turned provider after a clever turn inside his own half to find Lucas Mauragis who raced clear to goal and shoot past Freke.

Brisbane added a consolation goal through Ayom Majok however it was to no avail as the Jets held firm for the win.

Newcastle next find themselves in action on Saturday when they face the Wellington Phoenix at McDonald Jones Stadium at 6 pm.
