ALM Match Report: Jets suffer Sydney defeat

Sydney FC have defeated the Newcastle Jets 4-0 at Allianz Stadium on Friday night.

After a tense start, Jets striker Apostolos Stamatelopoulos had the ball in the back of the net inside the first 10 minutes after a brilliant through ball from Daniel WIlmering however the goal was ruled out for offside.

Clayton Taylor received plenty of treatment from his former side and was on the receiving end from some heavy tackles as Sydney’s central defensive pairing of Jake Girdwood-Reich and Gabriel Lacerda both received yellow cards.

Sydney FC opened the scoring in the 40th minute when Patrick Wood received a through ball in behind the Jet’s defence from Max Burgess to make it 1-0.

Sydney FC started the second half brightly when Patrick Wood found the back of the net from close range in the 47th minute however the goal was quickly ruled out as Joe Lolley was offside in the build-up.

The Jets had a big chance to draw level in the 57th minute when substitute Archie Goodwin did well to get in behind the Sydney FC defence, only to see his shot well saved by goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne.

The hosts doubled their lead in the 65th minute when Joe Lolley received the ball out wide on the right and cut inside to squeeze his shot in at the far post and make it 2-0.

Sydney FC made it 3-0 in the 75th minute when a ball to the back post from Fábio Gomes found Max Burgess who saw his header find the back of the net.

Burgess soon had his second when a ball down the left was comfortably tucked away by the attacking midfielder to make it 4-0.
