ALM Match Preview Newcastle Jets v Melbourne City

The Newcastle Jets will travel to Melbourne to take on league leaders Melbourne City on Sunday the 2nd of April at AAMI Park, with kick-off set for 3 pm. 

Prior to the one-week international break, the Jets saw a 2-2 draw against Perth Glory at home, which saw the away side level in the 97th minute of the match. Trent Buhagiar’s goal took the lead in the first half, with Kosta Grozos scoring late in the second half. 

Newcastle will be pushing for a spot in the top six, as finals are becoming closer. They are positioned seventh on the ladder with 25 points, and two points outside of sixth place.

Melbourne City is sitting on top of the ladder on 41 points and will be pushing towards securing the premier’s plate for this season. 

The previous match between the two sides resulted in City taking the three points, with a 2-1 win over the Jets in Melbourne, they also went down to ten men late in the match. Within their six previous meetings, Melbourne has won four and the Jets have won two.

City’s most recent match saw a 1-1 draw with Macarthur. In their 20 matches this season, City have won 12, drawn four, and lost three, they have also scored an impressive 47 goals, and conceded 25.

Sunday’s match will be a crucial one for the Jets as they look to maximise their points heading closer towards the end of the season, with just five scheduled matches left.

Trent Buhagiar has scored five goals so far this season, and has been clinical in attack for the Jets, helping his side with four assists also to his name. 

City’s leading goal scorer, Jamie Maclaren has also proven to be top-class this season, securing 18 goals to his name in his 21 games played. 

A key matchup can be seen with Maclaren and Jets centre-back Matthew Jurman who will be putting all stops out to ensure Maclaren doesn’t add any more goals to his name.
